In looking up something to do with de Tocqueville on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexis_de_tocqueville , found this cheerful passage.  Prescient?

Tocqueville warned that "modern democracy may be adept at inventing new forms of tyranny, because radical equality could lead to the materialism of an expanding bourgeoisie and to the selfishness of individualism. In such conditions "we lose interest in the future of our descendents…and meekly allow ourselves to be led in ignorance by a despotic force all the more powerful because it does not resemble one."^[21] Tocqueville worried that if despotism were to take root in a modern democracy, it would be a much more dangerous version than the oppression under the Roman emperors or tyrants of the past who could only exert a pernicious influence on a small group of people at a time. In contrast, a despotism under a democracy could see "a multitude of men," uniformly alike, equal, "constantly circling for petty pleasures," unaware of fellow citizens, and subject to the will of a powerful state which exerted an "immense protective power".^[2] Tocqueville compared a potentially despotic democratic government to a protective parent who wants to keep its citizens (children) as "perpetual children," and which doesn’t break men’s wills but rather guides it, and presides over people in the same way as a shepherd looking after a "flock of timid animals."^[2]

Enquiring minds would have some questions about this chart, but if we accept Morgan Stanley isn’t going to put out rubbish and did the diligence behind this chart, then we can get really depressed about it.

Two guys showed up from Sears to install the new washer. We only paid $1k for the old one 8 years ago so what do we expect.

My iPad battery died and I’d left the charger in Phili.

Another Sears guy showed up to fix the dishwasher, after we’d had to talk to Sears and order the parts separately, and after they hadn’t shown up the previous two times Marg had been waiting for them. Guess we’d been pretty harsh on that appliance over the past six months since we bought it.

Then my phone battery died mid-email, but at least I could find that charger.

Whatever did we do without all these modern conveniences.

Great.  Win some medals.

Hope we can finish up Dodd-Franks quickly, because now we need some (after the barn door, doesn’t actually regulate anything that matters, adds lots of administration costs and government bureaucracy but makes good political theatre) legislation to cover the whole financial industry!
