Happy Thanksgiving Canada

Image001

Here’s something to be thankful for.  Add 60K jobs versus 15K expected, and have unemployment fall from 7.3 to 7.1%.

Meantime down south here, over 9% unemployment and look at the difference in these two lines!  According to Bureau of Labour Statistics, the V shaped recovery in green:  that’s Canada.  The L shaped doldrums in blue:  that’s the US

No doubt a complete turn-around by American Thanksgiving a month from now, because Canadians will come down here and go shopping.

Photo of devastation from earthquake….I mean hurricane

Image

Today weather channel, CNN and every media outlet in the US, reported that this homeowner, not yet recovered from the earthquake earlier this week, was unable to get in their yard to pick up this chair because it was raining.

President Obama, homeland security secretary Janet Napolitana, NJ governor Chris Christie, and every other politician east of the Mississippi, all of whom earlier had jumped on tv to help alarm the public and ensure they were perceived to be concerned and proactive, announced that due to the heroic efforts of government officials and first responders, Megan, Brian, and Jake, could plan on enjoying their vacation at LBI later this week.

CNN announced that Dr. Sanjiv Gupta could stop standing out in the rain reporting on the adverse medical outcomes to be expected from drowning or having trees fall on your house, and go back to reporting on diabetes and childhood obesity. Anderson Cooper, having bravely risked disheveled hair for the past two days, is reported to be suffering from exhaustion having tried to find any of his correspondents with anything interesting to say, or any way to make video of red jackets wearing rubber boots standing in puddles interesting. Wilf Blitzer is reported to have said it looks good on him, and that he has a great story with Michelle Buchman explaining how this is all the Democrats fault, when he can get airtime. According to the Weather Channel, their PhD meteorologists and hurricane experts, exhausted from 48 hours of trying to find ways to keep the sense of panic forefront in the public’s mind while Irene weakened, can now take a well deserved rest, a job well done having achieved a record spike in their Nielsen ratings. Media employees and politicians, having saved us from the national catastrophe they created, can now also get a brief rest before we start the blame game, and while hurricane Jose forms in the gulf.

Really? Once again we get what we deserve. This will have been a tragedy for some unfortunate people, and the rest of us who have lived through this latest media assault will be a little more ambivalent next time. Like tomorrow.

You can take the chicks away from the mother, but…………

We were watching the baby peregrine falcon chicks today on the National Aviary’s falcon cams http://www.aviary.org/cons/falconcam_gt.phpMarg thought she might have trouble being a falcon because she “didn’t think she could just push them out of a nest 30 stories up on the Gulf & Western building”. Once a Mother…………I wondered if she might feel differently if she knew she was going to have 4 or 5 more the next year…………Happy Mother’s day.

Grummy’s BDay

Nice little party, despite guest of honour’s initial recalcitrance.  Excellent hosting job, tasty food, excellent “this is your life birthday girl” movie (and the trailer was a nifty touch), limerick reprise, nice toast from Mustache Man (which will no doubt be posted to Facebook imminently), and these words to live by from Aunt Peg (channeling Woody Allen).

Next Life

In my next life I want to live my life backwards.

You start out dead and get that out of the way.

Then you wake up in an old people’s home feeling better every day.

You get kicked out for being too healthy, go collect your pension, and then when

you start work, you get a gold watch and a party on your first day.

You work for 40 years until you’re young enough to enjoy your retirement.

You party, drink alcohol, and are generally promiscuous, then you are ready for high school.

You then go to primary school, you become a kid, you play.

You have no responsibilities, you become a baby until you are born.

And then you spend your last 9 months floating in luxurious spa-like conditions with central heating and room service on tap, larger quarters every day and then Voila….

You finish off as an orgasm!

I rest my case.

Want to see what 39 inches in 3 days at Alta looks like?

Just kidding.

Why doesn’t Alec look as happy as Andy or Anthony? Maybe an improved understanding of what happens if you don’t listen to the Instructor “keep your head up, look for colour, don’t shop your turn” and get a practical, and chilly, example of “if you look down your tips go down”.

Or out of shape and old legs maybe.

The other pics are the day we left.  Note sunshine coming up.  Who knew.

QADDAFI’S LETTER TO OBAMA: "Our Dear Son, Excellency, Baraka Hussein Abu Oumama"

Gus Lubin | Apr. 6, 2011, 3:54 PM | 1,316 |

Qaddafi has sent a rambling three-page letter to Obama imploring him to stop the airstrikes, according to the AP. He also wished him luck in the 2012 election.

UPDATE: Here’s the letter:

Our son, Excellency,
President Obama
U.S.A

We have been hurt more morally that physically because of what had happened against us in both deeds and words by you. Despite all this you will always remain our son whatever happened. We still pray that you continue to be president of the U.S.A. We Endeavour and hope that you will gain victory in the new election campaigne. You are a man who has enough courage to annul a wrong and mistaken action. I am sure that you are able to shoulder the responsibility for that.

Enough evidence is available, Bearing in mind that you are the president of the strongest power in the world nowadays, and since Nato is waging an unjust war against a small people of a developing country. This country had already been subjected to embargo and sanctions, furthermore it also suffered a direct military armed aggression during Reagan’s time. This country is Libya.

Hence, to serving world peace … Friendship between our peoples … and for the sake of economic, and security cooperation against terror, you are in a position to keep Nato off the Libyan affair for good. As you know too well democracy and building of civil society cannot be achieved by means of missiles and aircraft, or by backing armed member of AlQuaeda in Benghazi.

You, yourself, said on many occasions, one of them in the UN General Assembly, I was witness to that personally, that America is not responsible for the security of other peoples. That America helps only. This is the right logic.

Our dear son, Excellency, Baraka Hussein Abu oumama, your intervention is the name of the U.S.A. is a must, so that Nato would withdraw finally from the Libyan affair. Libya should be left to Libyans within the African union frame.

The problem now stands as follows:-

1. There is Nato intervention politically as well as military.

2. Terror conducted by AlQaueda gangs that have been armed in some cities, and by force refused to allow people to go back to their normal life, and carry on with exercising their social people’s power as usual.

Egyptians in Tahrir square getting tear gassed. New Yorkers in Times square snowboarding

Thank you WSJ for the second time this week.  Earlier you gave us Video of the bomb in the Moscow airport, tagged also with a story on pet grooming.  Today we have Video of Egypt rioting, tagged also with snowboarding in NYC!  Well we can probably all agree it is nice to be in America offered those alternatives.

Arab Unrest Spreading

Protests Rock Yemen; Opposition Leader Returns to Egypt

The day’s events extended a mood of astonishment that has taken hold in the region over the past two weeks. Suddenly, Arab regimes long viewed as invulnerable are being challenged.

WSJ’s Matt Bradley reports on Egyptian violence shutting down stock markets, and the possibility of the collapse of the Egyptian government.

Also, John Shipman on S&P downgrading Japan’s debt. And, video of kids snowboarding on the streets of NYCPlease, do these two stories belong together?

All Terrorism is local? or Yes we also want to be a video news network oops

This video tagline from the lead story in today’s WSJ, strikes me as a bit casual towards another country’s terrorism troubles?  Kind of hard to imagine the lead story on the Tucson tragedy or some US based terrorism incident being tucked in with some advice about how to care for your pets?  Does WSJ and their audience care less about terrorism in Russia than say in NAmerica, or are WSJ still trying to figure out how to be a radio or tv media too, and spend as much time teasing their next segment as they do their current story?

A powerful suicide-bomb blast at Russia’s busiest airport Monday killed at least 35 people just outside a high-security passenger-arrival zone. Greg White has the latest developments from Moscow. Plus, Wendy Bounds on winterizing your dog.  REALLY?
